Maple open form bowl. I had access to a bowl coring device. This is a type of tool that allows you to make the most of your stock, cutting several rough forms from a blank that would ordinarily produce only a single piece. This was the middle of three pieces from one very green blank.
I had originally set out to make three natural bark-edged bowls, but the blank had been cut in summer and bark adheres poorly when the tree is cut any season other than winter. In this piece I elected to keep a portion of the rim in its near natural state, so while most of the rim is carved smooth, a rough section where a branch exited the tree rises along one side. This kept to the spirit of what I was trying to do, which was to combine refined and natural surfaces.
