Salt & Pepper Mills. This particular set is made of cogwood (Tababuia chrysanthia), a tropical hardwood that is also grown as an ornamental in southern Florida. I make mills from apple, madrone, or any good, dense wood. Mills are a great way to show off the beauty of the wood, and you get very functional and practical product. To distinguish the salt from the pepper, I usually inset a colored piece of wood in at least one of the mills. Here you can see a small button of coolibah burl inlaid in one of the mills to set it apart.
I use ceramic crush grind mechanisms in my mills. This mechanism will not corrode in the presence of salt, so it is very durable.
Mills are pretty laborious to make, which partially accounts for their high cost. I also like to use highly figured or unusual wood, which can also add to the cost. However, a set should last a lifetime. I can also provide single mills if you do not need a set.
